What is the framework?

No matter how epic or how creative you’re the Media Studies framework provides you with the tools to help you develop a critical understanding of the media. The framework underpins the study of the media in all three components of the specification and is made up of four inter-related areas. Media language:  how the media communicates meaning through their forms, codes and conventions, and techniques. Representation:   how the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups. Media Industries:   how production, distribution and circulation are linked to an affect media forms and platforms. Audiences:   how media forms target, reach and address audiences. How audiences might interpret and respond to different media forms and how audiences may themselves become producers.

Stuart Hall- Reception theory

Image
I have been learning about the Stuart Hall theory .This is a active audience theory, this is were the audience takes an active role in the media. The theory states that there are messages in every form of media, people (the audience) will decode this message in their own way. An example of a miss interpreted piece of media is Miley Cyrus's "we cant stop" music video, she made it to stop the constant idea of Hanna Montana, it backfired as it was seen as 'disgraceful'. There are the 3 different types of audience: Dominate-they agree with the views of the media. negotiated- at a comprise between dominant and opposition.  opposition-they don't agree at all and reject its ideas.

Representation- Newspapers

Image
Today I learnt about how ideas can be represented in/through the newspapers. I did this by watching a video that showed a collection of all the images of males and females from The Sun newspaper over a period of 6 months. They then put all the images on a wall, it showed a massive difference between how the sexes were portrayed in the paper. The video showed that most of he males were doing sports or in real life situations, this is what was expected as its a sports based paper. However this was not the same for the females as they were shown modeling or in artificial situations the females were all seen as passive , and no sports images of females were found in the paper over the 6 month period. The BBC have done more research on this topic and they said:   "often failed to show consistent respect for the dignity  and equality of women generally". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20554942
